One of the most beautiful villages in Alsace

A charming Alsatian village with approximately 4,700 inhabitants. The old town is well worth seeing with its colorful houses. Ribeauvillé is also very popular because of the hike to its three castle ruins that overlook the town.

The upper city gate, the Dolder (1291), was built at the same time as the first fortifications at the end of the 13th century and served as a defensive tower, watchtower, and bell tower. In Alsatian, "Dolder" means "highest point, peak." At 25 meters high, this tower threatened the enemy with the stark and warlike appearance of its exterior, while the inner facade, facing the city, had delighted the inhabitants since the 16th century with its attractive arrangement of wooden beams and four corbelled vaults. Its first level formed one of the starting points of the patrol path that ran along the top of the ramparts around the city.

The town hall was built between 1808 and 1810 during the tenure of Mayor Samuel Karcher on the site of the old low gate with a tower. According to the text accompanying the laying of the foundation stone, the building was constructed according to the plans of the Colmar contractor Xavier Molly, which were reviewed and corrected by Louis Gouget, a retired engineer from Kaysersberg. He was entrusted with the construction supervision. According to a document from the Haut-Rhin Town Council, the plans were drawn up by Louis Gouget on behalf of the prefect. The construction work was accepted in June 1810. A modern extension was added to the north side, featuring a fire escape.

In front of the church, dedicated to the Holy Cross, stands the Constantine. It is the work of the same sculptor as the altarpiece in the church, Hans Bongart. It dates from 1521 and is made of pink and yellow sandstone.
