With the increasing size of ships and the subsequent upgrading of the Neckar for 135-meter ships up to the port of Heilbronn, the required safety distances between ships meeting each other and between ships and the bank can no longer be maintained in the short term. The bank is already subject to greater stress and is therefore being damaged. The resulting erosion impairs the stability of the embankment and the side dam. Measures to secure the left bank of the side canal are therefore urgently required.

The Kochendorf lock in the southern part of the city of Bad Friedrichshall consists of a double lock on the right bank and a power plant next to it on the left in the direction of the Neckar river. In the upper water there is the approximately 4.60 km long side canal Kochendorf. In the further course of the Altar of the Neckar, the associated dam in Neckarsulm also joins. Immediately below the lock chambers, a bridge crosses the Neckar, which also serves the power plant's works traffic. The lower edge of the bridge is approximately 20 cm above the water table.
