In the immediate vicinity, above Sauerbrunn Castle, is the so-called Sternschanze. It is a small, early modern defensive structure in the shape of a four-pointed star, the likes of which were probably only very rarely built in Northern Europe. However, since the Sternschanze is located near the castle, it can be assumed that it served to protect it and to safely store valuables, as well as to serve as a place of refuge for the local population and the castle residents in times of war. The fortified Sternschanze was built in 1567.
