The former Mariaberg monastery
The former Mariaberg monastery, built by Abbot Ulrich Rösch between 1487 and 1489, was destroyed shortly before completion in the power-political struggle between the city of St. Gallen and the Prince Abbot and later rebuilt. The building, which was never used as a monastery, passed to the Canton of St. Gallen in 1864, which founded the Mariaberg teacher training college. From 1969 to 1978 it was extensively renovated according to art historical findings. The Gothic cloister and the former chapter house (now the music room) are particularly noteworthy. Today it houses the University of Education of the Canton of St. Gallen. The building can be visited during school hours.
Guided tours are also possible on telephone request.
