The main line was built and opened in 1838 as the first railway line in Prussia between Berlin and Potsdam. In 1845 the route to Magdeburg was expanded and thus became an important traffic artery. In 1891, the “New Wannsee Railway” from Berlin to Zehlendorf was opened parallel to the main line. This new route served as a local train for commuters from Zehlendorf to Berlin. Long-distance trains continued to run on the main line. Due to the electrification of the main line, the S-Bahn trains could now switch to the main line and Potsdam could therefore be reached by S-Bahn from Berlin.
