The leaves and fruits of hogweed are rich in essential oils. Touching some types of plants can cause skin irritation and burns due to the fact that all their parts contain furanocoumarins - substances that sharply increase the body's sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation. The hogweed causes the most severe burns when it comes in contact with the skin on clear sunny days.
