The Retzer windmill, together with the one in Podersdorf, is the last operational windmill in Austria. Originally there were about 400.

It is located on a hill between Retz and the Manhartsberg, which forms the border between the Weinviertel and the Waldviertel. The ascent from Retz is short but fairly steep. Coming from Hofern (already in the Waldviertel) it goes almost continuously downhill. The paths are now completely asphalted and well labeled.

A wooden post mill was built here in 1772, which was replaced in 1855 by the present building. Right next to it is a former windmill from 1775, which at the end of the 19th century, after a fire caused by lightning, has since been used as a residential building.

Visits are possible as part of a guided tour.

May to September: daily 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m

(guided tour every hour, last guided tour at 5:00 p.m.)

April and October: daily guided tours at 11:00 and 15:00 on weekdays

The Retz windmill is probably the most famous building in the region. It is enthroned on a hill, from where there is a wonderful view towards Retz. From the outside it is a wonderful photo opportunity, which alone is worth a visit. However, if you want to learn more, you should visit one of the guided tours, it really pays off. Absolute top highlight!
