The tower Windsbach served in the Middle Ages as a watchtower of the former street castle. After the 30-year war, a timber-framed structure was set up as the upper floor, but it is plastered.

A local aristocratic family from Windsbach is first documented in 1130 as ministerials of the Counts of Horburg. The castle, probably built in the 12th century, was first mentioned in 1253. It is stated as the place of issue of a certificate from Albrecht Rindsmaul von Grünberg. The castle was originally a fiefdom of the Counts of Oettingen, but they ceded part of it to the Lords of Dornberg and the rest to the Nuremberg burgraves in 1281. In 1292 the Lords of Dornberg's share of the castle and town was sold to the burgraves. In the period that followed, the burgraves pledged the office until they took it over at the beginning of the 15th century. only given out as a fief. In 1413, Hans von Heldburg received Windsbach Castle as a fief from the Nuremberg burgrave; in 1441 it was in the hands of his son-in-law Wolf von Thann. The castle was destroyed in the first Margrave War in 1449/50. After the castle was destroyed, the area apparently remained unused until a new building called a “castle” was built in 1736/37.

The only surviving remnant of the castle is today's Windsbacher Stadtturm, the former keep of the complex. The lower floors of the square tower made of ashlar masonry probably date from the 13th century, the upper floors made of plastered half-timbering from the 17th/18th. Century.

Very worth seeing medieval-looking town center.
