Gamla Staden, the historic old town, is the heart of Malmö's city center.It is bordered on three sides by an old canal and on the west side by Kungsparken
and Slottsgatan.The historic district essentially consists of two distinct parts.To the west, there is the Gamla Väster district with its large number of historic buildings
and to the east, there is the part that was renovated during the urban redevelopment efforts
in the 1960s.Södergatan, Malmö's main shopping street, runs between the two largest squares, Stortorget and Gustav Adolfs Torg. In addition to a variety of different shops, boutiques, and department stores, there are also two large shopping centers in the old town.Stortorget, laid out around 1540, is the largest square in Malmö.On its east side is the old Malmö Town Hall, built between 1544 and 1547.
