The parish of Schönberg was first documented in 1259. The church is situated on the Sconeberg, the highest point in the area, which gave the village its name. The current church is a new building designed by Johann Adam Richter between 1780 and 1784.

It has nearly 1000 seats.

Architecturally, the building combines late Baroque elements with a classical hall design: brickwork on a granite base, large arched windows, and a striking tower define its appearance.

Inside, the wooden mirror-vaulted ceiling provides seating for nearly a thousand people.
