A quiet but beautifully restored stopover in the "Fraecian ODW": the Hallsteine (Hall Stones). Here (in this area), red sandstone was once quarried, used in/on buildings, castles, churches, official residences, and noble estates, but also for wayside shrines, boundary stones, well posts and well troughs, staircases, door and window surrounds. Some of the boulders were already worked in the forest and brought to the rivers by oxcart, then transported further by ship. Quarrying is a family business... and here are some "examples".
Anyone with an eye for "small things" must have been here (at least once)! It's worth it!
