Vlierden (Vlierde dialect) is a village in the municipality of Deurne in the Dutch province of Noord-Brabant. The former municipality of Vlierden (abolished in 1926) was bordered by the Oude Aa in the north and Astense Aa in the south.

    Quick Facts
    History

Chapel on the Oude Torenweg in Vlierden, demolished in 1902.
Vlierden consists of a relatively recent village, surrounded by a large number of hamlets, mainly situated on a deck of sand along the Oude Aa. Already in a 12th century copy of a charter from 721 we find Vlierden as "Fleodrodum" (presumably in the sense of "residence, overgrown with elderberry bushes"). We may have to look for the oldest Vlierden of historical times in the neighborhood of the old chapel of Vlierden, which stood on Oude Torenweg until 1902. Nowadays a memorial chapel from the De Maurissens family can be found on this site. Near this old chapel there is still a strongly renovated farmhouse, on the spot where once the "Kerkhofhoeve", formerly owned by the Abbey of Binderen, stood. It is possible that this farm is the farm mentioned in 721.

    Elderden in 1866
In 1681 Vlierden became an independent parish, while in 1505 it had already become a glory by the issue of the low jurisdiction by the Duke of Brabant.

Around the 17th century the center of the village moved to the west, where a first town hall was built at the end of the 18th century. This was replaced in 1902 by the building that is still there. In 1845 the current Sint-Willibrorduskerk was built on Pastoriestraat, on the spot where the barn church used to be. This barn church had become necessary at the end of the 17th century, because at the Treaty of Münster in 1648 all churches and chapels had become the property of the government and used by Protestant residents. The new church from 1845 definitely meant that the village's bowl was located here. Soon school, monastery and more farms were built, so that the village of Vlierden was actually mentioned. From the Second World War, the center subsequently took on more shape with a few small new-build neighborhoods.

In 1926 the municipality of Vlierden merged with the municipality of Deurne and Liessel to form the new municipality of Deurne. In 1968 this municipality lost the old Vlierdense part of Brouwhuis on the Helmond growth center.

In Vlierden, on a site called Ven, is the family cemetery of doctor-pictor Hendrik Wiegersma.

    Gentlemen
Between 1505 and 1923 we can distinguish an uninterrupted series of men and women van Vlierden.

With the abolition of the last wonderful right, the hunting right, the glory of Vlierden ceased to exist in 1923. There was no real estate or social position on the basis of which the last gentleman could still call himself a titular gentleman.

    Nature and landscape
The village area of Vlierden is bordered on the south by the Astense Aa. On the northwestern side is the Brouwhuissche Heide, now a forest area, and on the southeastern side is the Liessel forests or the Galgenberg. On the other side of the Astense Aa lies the Oostappense Heide behind the hamlet of Oostappen. In the Brouwhuis heath lies the busy nature reserve De Bikkels, which consists of a heathland with drifting sand hills and juniper berries.
