The barbican (or the barbican) is a defense work in the form of a round bastion, which is located in front of the gate of a late medieval or renaissance-era castle or city wall. The round in classic Baumanier design served as a cannon bastion without preferential direction for judging the freely deployed there cannons. The Barbacans are an attempt to react to the firearms in the second half of the 15th century by adding gates and defensive structures to defend the gates. Later Raveline were used in a similar function.
