The Sanctuary of Montello is one of the most important ossuaries housing the remains
are collected from the Italians who died during the First World War.
The sanctuary is located in the hamlet of Colesel de Zorzi, in the municipality of Nervesa
della Battaglia). It collects the remains of 9,325 (initially 9,316)
Italian soldiers (of whom 6,099 identified and 3,226 unknown), previously buried
in approximately one hundred and twenty cemeteries spread along the Piave front. It became
designed by the Roman architect Felice Nori and completed in 1935. The shape is
similar to that of other buildings of this type: a cube-shaped structure
with a large concrete square, empty in the middle, around which the stairs revolve. It
complex is divided into two parts: the lower one, of three floors, houses the
bodies in single or communal cells with marble cladding; the
uppermost is a large tower from which you can admire the landscape that it
was the center of the fighting. Everything culminates in a glass and steel dome,
completed in the 1980s. Located inside the mausoleum, in the hollow part
a small chapel. There is also a part that is used as a museum
collects artefacts and news about the Solstizio battle. Nearby is the Sacello
Francesco Baracca, a shrine dedicated to the absolute Italian ace of aces from the
First World War, with 34 aerial victories.
