Rita came from the central Italian region of Umbria. She was born in the small village of Roccaporena in 1371, probably as Margherita Lotti, and "Rita" soon became her nickname.

Around 1385 she married Ferdinando di Mancino.

The marriage produced two sons.

However, the serene family life contrasted with the hatred and division of the time. Rita's husband was murdered. To prevent her sons from avenging him, she hid her dead father's blood-stained shirt from them. In her heart she forgave her husband's murderers.

Later she became a nun in Cascia and immersed herself in prayer.

In 1432, while praying, she discovered the wound of a thorn from the crown of the crucified Christ on her forehead. The stigma remained on her face until her death 15 years later.
