As early as the 19th century, Austria-Hungary laid several barriers along the then border with Italy to secure the area. Until 1915, new fortifications were built and used during the First World War, even if many of them were already out of date. The Forte Saccarana belonged to the Tonale Fortress, just like the Forte Mero, which is located nearby.
