Tips

  • The Marienkirche in Båstad in the northwest of Skåne is a remarkable building due to its size alone. It is also the only building left from the foundation of the city.
The construction of St. Mary's Church began in 1450, the very year in which Båstad first appears as a city. The Danish King Christian I had bought land from the farmers of the region to build a new port city. Ten years later, the church was finished and was consecrated as St. Mary's Church. Further extensions were added in the following decades. With her size, Christian I wanted to show the importance of founding Båstad for him. After a brief heyday in the 16th century, however, Båstad quickly lost in importance, lost almost all the historic buildings in two Stdtbränden and only centuries later gained popularity as a popular seaside resort.
Due to its size, St. Mary's Church is often referred to as a "mini cathedral". Particularly worth seeing are a number of murals dating from the 15th and early 16th centuries and u. a. representing the martyrdom of St. Erasmus. Also significant is a wooden statue of Mary, which evidently originated during the construction phase in the middle of the 15th century. It is considered the greatest treasure of the church.schwedenstube.de/blog/kirche-von-bastad
