The Diemelsee is located a few kilometers northeast of the Uplands in the northeastern foothills of the Rothaargebirge, which lies in the northeast of the Rhenish Slate Mountains. Immediately east-southeast of the dam rises the Eisenberg (594.6 m) and a few kilometers south of the Koppen reservoir (715.1 m).
