The Heessen forest
The district of Hamm-Heessen got its name from the forest, because the original name "Hesnon" means bush forest. With its size of 441 hectares, the Heessen Forest covers 15.6% of the area of the Heessen district. The entire city of Hamm only has a forest area of 7%. In 1962 the city sold the forest to the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, and since then it has been a state forest. Oak, beech, ash and hornbeam characterize the area, which is accessible through a whole network of hiking trails.
