The FFH area "Ochsenweide, Schafhauser Wald und Feuchtwiesen bei Esens" comprises a habitat complex made up of a rewetted high moor, which is surrounded by wet meadows and deciduous forests. The Benser Tief, which also cuts through the raised bog area in its western quarter, runs as a deeply dug canal on the southern edge.
The high and transitional bog Ochsenweide, which has been renatured very successfully, especially on the east side of the Benser Tief, shows in some areas a very remarkable, still largely complete raised bog vegetation.
