In 1370, the Lords of Künßberg built a "solid" house on the basalt cone of Bärenstein (or Bernstein), from which the present-day castle later developed. It was not until 1764 and 1793 that the lord of the castle had a settlement of 11 "drip houses" built here for his servants, from which the present-day town of Wernstein developed.

Very nice castle in Wernstein. Music events are often held here, which are really great. The castle is one of the most beautiful castle complexes in Upper Franconia. The Künsberg family has lived there for over 600 years. The castle consists of half-timbered elements and sandstone and is one of the Renaissance buildings.

Caution! The castle is privately owned and can only be viewed from afar. But below there is a nice forest path to a waterfall.
