This cannon is located at the Mauritsbrug. A beautiful spot along the Dinkel that is accessible on foot and by bike during the day.

This is the place where Prince Maurits crossed the Dinkel with his troops in 1597 during the 80-year war. With an army of 9,000 infantry, 1,600 horses and heavy artillery, he tried to drive out the Spaniards. The bridge at that time was not designed for the weight of the heavy guns. Pioneers were ordered to cut down trees to strengthen the bridge. Enschede, Oldenzaal and Ootmarsum were successfully liberated by the Dutch troops at the time.
