The place was mentioned around 1400 in the Salbuch of Seeon Monastery. Steinkirchen was originally the name of a single farm with the parish church of St. Peter in Rohrdorf. Around 1824 the farm was inhabited by a family of ten. The place name was then adopted by the municipality of Steinkirchen, which consisted of 46 houses with 47 families and around 300 inhabitants around 1843.
