Best Hikes to Saga Column at Elveseter

Tips

  • The 34-meter-high saga column was built in 1992 in the municipality of Lom in Bøverdal. It was originally planned to set it up in front of the Norwegian Parliament in Oslo under the name "Eisvollsøyla". The monument was first thought of in 1836. Professor W. Rasmussen, who shaped the appearance of the column, was able to prevail in a sculpture competition.

When the column was half completed in 1940, the work had to be stopped because of the war. A political split caused further delays. After no one had worked on the column for 20 years, Åmund Elvesæter took care of the completion and installation in Bøverdal. It tells the story of Norway from 872 to the 1814 Imperial Assembly.

  • From a distance you can see the column, which cannot be integrated into the landscape at all. But you know very nice pictures.

  • The column was originally intended to be a national monument in Oslo. However, this plan was stopped because the column, or rather the artist, was said to have ties to the German occupying forces during WW II.
