Once a year, the crossroads in the forest where the wayside shrine stands is filled with people when Catholics from the Urles communities make a star-shaped pilgrimage to the “Red Marter”. The name “Red Marter” is said to come from a sacrificial site in the forest near Reichmannshausen, where Germanic tribes once shed the blood of sacrificial animals. According to legend, there is an undiscovered treasure slumbering in the ground near the “Red Marter”. The wayside shrine is - along with four other wayside shrines, a fountain house and a Nepomuk figure - part of a circular hiking trail. This seven and a half kilometer long circular route begins in Aidhausen near the festival hall, is mostly gravel and suitable for pedestrians and cyclists. On it you can easily find the “Red Marter”, from which it is only three kilometers to Lake Ellertshäuser.

Since “time immemorial,” as the Aidhaus pastor Georg Weimer wrote to the Würzburg bishop in 1888, there has been a wayside shrine, the “Red Marter,” in the Urleswald between Aidhausen, Humprechtshausen and Kerbfeld. This wayside shrine was made of wood and was replaced by a stone one in the year of writing, which was renovated 100 years later in 1988. The wooden relief panel of the original Marterl, which shows the Fourteen Holy Helpers, has been preserved. “I come here very often,” says Oskar Schüßler from Aidhausen about his most beautiful spot, “mainly because of the peace and quiet.” Here he feels like he can unload the burden of everyday life and let go. Candles are constantly burning in the red sandstone wayside shrine and show that this place is regularly visited by believers - for silent prayer or, like Oskar Schüßler, to pause and take a breather.
