Probably the most famous sanctuary dedicated to the Archangel Michael is in France. It is the "Mont-Saint-Michel", in the far north of the country on an island in front of Normandy. This unique monastery island is not only a place of worship, but also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Around 1475, the old, Romanesque nave had to be widened and a vault with columns was installed. The porch of the church has also been enlarged. The outer facade has been redesigned and used high-Gothic windows. There was nothing reminiscent of the Romanesque roots. The valuable equipment of the church, such as the winged altar, was lost.In the mid-17th century, the Baroque was introduced to the church, the interior was styled. But even today, only a small amount has survived. In the late 19th century, the community decided to put the church back in the Gothic style.
