The ruins of the Karlsburg Castle stand high above the Main. The documented history of the castle goes back to the 8th century, when King Pippin the Younger gave the castle and the associated royal court to the first Würzburg bishop Burkard in 751/53. The castle itself was probably built in the Carolingian period, possibly under Charles Martel at the beginning of the 8th century, or as early as the late Merovingian period in the 7th century. It was expanded several times and was an important place in the early medieval history of Main Franconia. It came to an end in the Peasants' War, when it was burned down in 1525.
From the Main cycle path up to the Karlsburg, you cycle through Mühlbach, following Stadelhofer Strasse in a westerly direction, then turning right through the Hagwald forest. A footpath leads directly from the cinema opposite the bridge driveway up to the ruins.

Beautiful Panoramaweg (Trail) leads from the top of the ruin with stunning views of the Main Valley and Karlstadt with its historic city wall.
