Old legend to Lichtenstein and Lichteneck: Opposite the Hubirg on a rugged mountain was the castle Lichtenstein and further up in the valley the castle Lichteneck. It is said that the owners of both castles had made a sign when, down in the valley on the road leading from Nuremberg to Bohemia, merchants came with their goods, and then robbed them. At last both castles had been broken by the Nurembergers; but the last Lichtensteiner had escaped to Bohemia and there became the master of the house Lichtenstein.

Nice view from the old castle ruin into the Pegnitz valley. The climb is worthwhile, with the MTB the ruin can be reached as well. The roads are demanding, though.

The castle ruins Lichtenstein was a high medieval Adelsburg over the village Pommelsbrunn.

From the castle Lichtenstein there are no archaeological findings about the edification, but because of its name it could have been related to the Hohenstaufen empire castle Lichtenegg, which existed at least since the early 13th century. There was also a direct line of sight between the two castles. Even ceramic finds date back to the early 13th century.

For the first time the castle Lichtenstein appeared in 1270 in the name of the ministerial Heinrich von Lichtenstein, an "Agnes Lichtensteinerin" was mentioned in 1297. The ministerial family of the Lichtensteiner was probably originally in imperial service and had relations with the powerful gifts of Reicheneck. In a note from the 16th century is reported that the Lichtensteiner were once subjected to, it is said to have been destroyed the castle. Gustav Voit suspected this destruction in 1325 when a feud between the taverns of Reicheneck and the imperial city of Nuremberg destroyed the Reichenecker castle "Turm im Weidental" due to raids, and the castle Hartenstein was besieged by the Nurembergers. Even the castle Lichtenstein could have been affected because the Lichtensteiner were close to the Reicheneckern. However, there is no evidence for this.
