Bavaria's King Ludwig I, created an artificial waterway from Bamberg to Kehlheim in just ten years, linking the Main and the Danube for the first time. On 15.07.1846 the Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal was officially opened. With a length of 173 km, 10 Brückkanalbauten and 100 locks, this channel was an overwhelming achievement of the engineering of its time. Today, the old canal and the Brückkanal is a popular destination for families and those seeking relaxation.
