Four railway enthusiasts from Hamburg founded the German Railway Association in November 1964 with the aim of preserving a narrow-gauge railway as a living open-air museum in the long term. On July 2, 1966, the DEV was able to open the "First Museum Railway in Germany" on the narrow-gauge railway line from Bruchhausen-Vilsen to Asendorf; it is thus the oldest German open-air railway museum. A unique collection of more than 100 historic vehicles from numerous German narrow-gauge railways, consisting of steam locomotives, railcars, diesel locomotives, passenger, baggage and freight cars, trolleys and service vehicles, has come together in the vehicle hall.
