  • The Schwabstedt church was built around 1160. It was originally a Romanesque fieldstone building, which lost much of its simple beauty through renovations. The church has had a ridge turret (tower) since 1889, and a large church clock was installed as early as 1644, which is now in the museum.

  • Schwabstedt was a bishop's seat from around 1268 to 1700 and the Treene was an important waterborne trade route at that time. Theodor Storm dedicated two novellas to the town, namely "Renate" and "Zur Wald- und Wasserfreude".
