A nice and easy walking and cycling path along the Gave de Pau river. The two bridge crossings might be uneasy with heavily loaded bikes, tandems or recliners. The path is supposed to go all the way to Tarsacq, but a segment have been destroyed by the Gave de Pau flood in 2013 and never rebuilt nor properly bypassed. Both Komoot and Open Cycle Map shows a bypass walking path, but the state of neglect of the vegetation makes it impassable with a bike.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What are the main cycling routes along the Gave de Pau and Gave d'Oloron rivers?

The primary routes include the Gaves Greenway (Voie Verte des Gaves), a dedicated, traffic-free path running along the Gave de Pau, notably linking Lourdes to Pierrefitte-Nestalas for about 18 km. Another significant route is the Vélosud Route, connecting Pau to Lourdes, which is approximately 50 km long and combines dedicated cycle paths with quieter secondary roads. For the Gave d'Oloron, cyclists can find easy loops on quiet departmental roads, often leading to places like Navarrenx.

What is the typical terrain and difficulty level for cycling along the Gave?

The terrain varies significantly. Sections like the Gaves Greenway are generally flat and considered easy, making them ideal for families and casual riders. The Vélosud Route between Pau and Lourdes includes a mix of dedicated paths and secondary roads, with some undulating sections as it approaches the Pyrenean foothills. While generally accessible, one cyclist noted that some bridge crossings along the Gave de Pau might be challenging with heavily loaded bikes, tandems, or recliners.

Are there any specific sections of the Gave cycling routes that are currently impassable or difficult to navigate?

Yes, a segment of the path along the Gave de Pau towards Tarsacq was destroyed by a flood in 2013 and has not been rebuilt. While some maps might show a bypass walking path, the vegetation's state of neglect makes it impassable for bikes. Cyclists should be aware of this specific section and plan alternative routes if heading towards Tarsacq.

What historical landmarks and scenic viewpoints can cyclists expect to see along the Gave river routes?

Cyclists will encounter a rich blend of historical and natural beauty. Along the routes, you can see the Château de Pau, the sanctuaries and historic castle in Lourdes, and charming medieval villages such as Nay, Lestelle, and Saint-Pé. Scenic viewpoints offer breathtaking views of the Pyrenean mountains, tranquil riverbanks, and lush forests. Information signs along the Gaves Greenway often provide insights into the history of the valley towns.

Is public transport accessible for reaching the cycling routes along the Gave river?

While specific public transport details for accessing every starting point are not extensively detailed, major towns like Pau and Lourdes are well-connected by regional public transport, including train and bus services. These cities serve as excellent hubs for beginning your cycling adventure along the Gave de Pau, with routes often starting directly from or near these urban centers.

What is the best time of year to cycle along the Gave, considering weather and crowds?

Spring through autumn generally offers the best conditions for cycling along the Gave, providing a refreshing outdoor experience. However, if you prefer to avoid crowds, particularly on the popular Gaves Greenway, consider cycling during the shoulder seasons (spring or late autumn) or on weekdays. The region can get busy during peak summer months, especially around Lourdes.

Are the cycling trails along the Gave river family-friendly and suitable for electric bikes?

Yes, many sections, especially the Gaves Greenway, are designed to be accessible and safe for cyclists of all ages and abilities, including families with children. The relatively flat and traffic-free nature of these paths makes them ideal for a leisurely family outing. Electric bikes are also well-suited for these routes, providing assistance on any more undulating sections or for covering longer distances with ease.

Are there cafes, restaurants, or accommodation options conveniently located along the Gave cycle paths?

Yes, the routes wind through areas rich in history and culture, passing through cities like Pau and Lourdes, and numerous medieval villages. These locations offer ample opportunities to find cafes, restaurants, and various accommodation options. The region is also known for its rich gastronomy, allowing cyclists to enjoy local dishes, wines, and cheeses along their journey.

What should cyclists pack for a trip along the Gave, especially regarding varied terrain and weather?

Given the varied terrain and potential for changing weather, cyclists should pack layers of clothing suitable for both sunny and cooler conditions, especially if venturing into more mountainous areas. Essential gear includes a helmet, water bottles, snacks, a basic repair kit (including spare tubes), and navigation tools. For those with heavily loaded bikes, be mindful of potential challenges at certain bridge crossings.

Are there any specific permits or regulations required for cycling on the Gave d'Oloron cycle paths?

Generally, dedicated cycle paths and greenways in France, including those along the Gave d'Oloron, do not require special permits for recreational cycling. They are public access routes. However, cyclists should always adhere to standard road safety regulations, respect local signage, and be mindful of other users on shared paths.

Can cyclists access more challenging Pyrenean climbs from the Gave river routes?

Absolutely. While many sections of the Gave routes are gentle, they also serve as excellent access points for more experienced and competitive cyclists looking to tackle the legendary, challenging climbs of the Pyrenees. Famous cols like the Col d'Aubisque and the Col de Marie-Blanque, often featured in the Tour de France, are within reach from the broader region, offering a diverse experience for all skill levels.
