The Alpstein rises about 160m above Kirchhosbach, the most important elevation in the district. However, it is not a free-standing mountain cone, but the Alpstein is part of the "Hosbach-Sontra-Bergland".
Because of its uniqueness, the Alpstein is an official natural monument.

The Alpstein, an extinct volcano, was formed around 50 to 60 million years ago, in the Tertiary period. The basalt cone was formed by the eruption of fiery liquid lava through the overlying Buntsandstein.
The Alpstein is an official natural monument and designated as a nature reserve.
Very nice view in the direction of the Hoher Meißner with its transmission towers.

Super vantage point 👀
From the secondary summit on the right, the view is even more beautiful because there are no trees blocking the view
