City Councilor James Hobrecht solved Berlin's sewage problem at the end of the 19th century by building a sewer system and creating sewage treatment fields (areas designed to treat wastewater) around the city.
"The sewage sludge in the sewage basins served as a valuable fertilizer on the sandy, nutrient-poor soils and now provided ideal conditions for growing vegetables. With the construction of the Falkenberg sewage treatment plant in 1968, the sewage fields were no longer needed."
