The church of Santiago Ermelo is what remains today of an old monastery prior to the 11th century. A fragment of a Visigothic inscription remained from this pre-Romanesque period. The monastery was probably destroyed in the year 1104 after a Norman attack and Xelmírez himself would be the one who ordered it to be rebuilt and would change its dedication, passing from San Benito to Santiago.

The church of Ermolo is one of the first sacral buildings on the peninsula Morrazo. It probably belonged originally to the Benedictines. Individual parts of the building date back to the 12th century!

Lovely small church in a very well kept village. Lovely spot to make a stop.
