The Hamburg Worker Colony Foundation acquired the Schäferhof in 1898 in order to offer help and homeless people a new perspective on life. The foundation is still committed to this task today and maintains social services as well as living and workshops at the Schäferhof location. The Schäferhof in Appen, which is over 300 hectares in size, offers a structured agricultural landscape that is crisscrossed by watercourses and broken up by curtsey, hedges and shrubs. In addition, the landscape on about 70 hectares is permanently changed by gravel mining. Here are three smaller lakes and a former landfill.
