Knott’s No.1 Mill was one of the largest sawmills in the Otways, set up on Young Creek in 1908 and purchased the following year by Melbourne timber merchant G.W. Knott. Destroyed by fire in 1921, it was rebuilt two years later and kept milling until 1932. Today, old log carts, a steam boiler and steep-sided sawdust heaps still sit among the rainforest beside the walkway, giving you a glimpse of how busy this quiet gully once was.
