The truth discovered during major archaeological excavations in the 1960s and 1980s turned out to be much more shocking. Inside the chapel and right next to its walls, three large mass graves were discovered containing the remains of over 130 men. The marks on the bones still terrify scientists today: deep sword cuts, skulls shattered by axe blows, and arrowheads embedded in the bones. Anthropological analyses proved that some of the wounded died in terrible agony for many hours after the main armies had left.
