The new Sissia Monastery (Greek: Ιερά Μονή Υπεραγίας Θεοτόκου Σισσίων). The historic, original monastery was founded in the 13th century. According to tradition, its founding is attributed to Saint Francis of Assisi, from whom the name "Sissia" is most likely derived.
Originally built as a Catholic monastery of the Latin Diocese, it later came into the possession of the Greek Orthodox Church.
The old monastery building, located near the coast, was almost completely destroyed in the devastating earthquake of 1953. Subsequently, the monastery was rebuilt in its current, slightly higher location.
