Without the many barrages on the Moselle, the cargo traffic on the Moselle would not be possible. At the barrages, the ships overcome the difference in altitude over the locks.

The Koblenz barrage is the last barrage on the Moselle before it flows into the Rhine in Koblenz. It is equipped with a roller weir (in contrast to the other Moselle barrages which are equipped with sector weirs), two locks for large motor cargo ships, a boat lock, a hydroelectric power station and a fish ladder. The entire facility crosses a steel walkway for pedestrians. The barrage at Moselle kilometer 1.94 was completed in 1951, making it the oldest system in the course of the Moselle canalisation.
