    Tips

    October 8, 2026

Pioneer Peaks National Park protects about 1,900 hectares of rugged mountain country, forest, and rocky peaks northwest of Mackay, including Mount Jukes, Mount Blackwood, and The Leap, also known as Mount Mandurana. These steep summits are the eroded cores of an ancient volcanic field, rising sharply above the surrounding cane fields, with slopes ranging from open woodland to dense rainforest. Facilities are limited, and the terrain is remote, so the park best suits self-reliant walkers prepared to explore beyond the more developed parks.
