The white-tailed eagle is at home here, along with several other endangered animal and plant species. Lake Hohner is part of a large and diverse nature reserve in the immediate vicinity of the Königsmoor and Hartshoper Moor.
Lake Hohner is considered the last remaining shallow-water geest lake and serves as a floodplain for the Eider-Treene-Sorge region.
It releases its water via a channel into the Sorge and then further into the Eider.

The Hohner See is a lake about 12 km west of the town of Rendsburg in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein near the village of Hohn. The lake is about 71 hectares in size and up to 1.0 m deep. It is the last surviving Geest flat lake in the flooded landscape of the Eider-Treene-Sorge lowlands.

Information boards from the State Office for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas in the State of Schleswig-Holstein provide easy-to-understand insights into the flora and fauna and the importance of Lake Hohner in the region.
