Giorgos Anemogiannis (1798-1821) was a hero of the Greek War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire. He originally came from the island of Paxos. In June 1821, he launched a brave and sacrificial mission in the port of Nafpaktos: he attempted to set fire to an Ottoman warship using a fire ship (a ship loaded with combustibles). The mission, however, failed, and Anemogiannis was captured and executed by Ottoman forces.
