The Warrnambool Pier was built between 1874 and 1890 using massive 32-tonne concrete blocks transported by railroad, and at the time it was an impressive engineering feat. The goal was to protect ships from the powerful swells of the Southern Ocean. Today the pier serves as a recreational hotspot, with anglers casting lines into both the calm harbour waters and the rougher ocean side. Walkers and tourists also come to explore the pier and enjoy the panoramic coastal views.
