Kanturk is a historic market town at the confluence of the Allow and Dalua rivers. Its name, Ceann Toirc in Irish means 'the head of the boar' and legend says that Ireland's last wild boar was slain here. Kanturk Castle is a particularly notable building. Constructed in the early 17th century, this Tudor mansion was never completed after the English Privy Council ordered construction to cease in 1718, 17 years after it began, having become worried about its size and defensive capabilities.
