It is part of the Lower Lower Rhine bird sanctuary.

Here you will find something very special: the only black tern colony in northwest Germany that can be found here in the bird sanctuary, for which artificial nesting aids have been installed to make breeding easier for the birds. This species, which is threatened with extinction, has been made at home and settled here again . Every year around 50 pairs can be seen breeding in the area around Millinger Meer. Bird lovers will get their money's worth, as you can also observe swans, wading birds, ducks and geese, which find important places in the area for resting, breeding, moulting and also for overwintering.

The Millingerwaard is a nature reserve in the municipality of Berg en Dal in Gelderland and is part of the Gelderse Poort, which has been designated as a Natura 2000 area. The area is located west of Millingen in the Ooijpolder on the Waal and is approximately 400 hectares in size.

This is also where the Galloways like to cool off on warm days. Beautiful area. On weekends, however, there is a lot going on here when the weather is good.
