The current building was built in the 12th century. Originally, this church (sometimes called Sainte-Anne de la Castelle or Notre-Dame) served as an annex to an important neighboring Benedictine priory, attached to the abbey of Sarlat.

The main priory having been devastated and ruined by religious conflicts, the annex church was restored to become the official parish church. It was in the 17th century that it officially took on the double title of Saint-Sardos and Sainte-Anne.
