Texada Island is the largest of the Gulf Islands and is a rugged landscape of granite and limestone in the Strait of Georgia known by locals as “The Rock.” People have lived here for at least 3,000 years, with evidence of shell mounds and fish traps that are still visible on the island’s west shore, long before Spanish explorers arrived and named it in 1791. Mining once built a boomtown economy on the island, and today there isn’t a bear, cougar, or wolf to be found here, making the trails, lakes, and beaches all the more relaxing to explore.
