The most distinctive element of the national park are the shifting dunes between the coastal lakes and the Baltic Sea. If you take a walk on the Leba Spit between the 40 meter high sand walls in midsummer, you will quickly understand why this area is also called the “Polish Sahara”. Central Europe's largest shifting dunes in terms of area move about two to ten meters to the east each year.
