The Scilly Isles occupy an important strategic position near the entrance to the English Channel – a sea route that was of crucial importance in the constant power struggle between European nations in the past. From the Tudor period in the 16th century onwards, the islands developed into an important port and base for naval operations and privateers.
The port of Hugh Town became the main anchorage of the islands. To prevent it from falling into enemy hands, construction of fortifications began in 1551.
